Line Reactors -An Effective Solution for Modern SCR Drive and Inverter Applications

Line reactors are a powerful solution to address issues commonly found in today's SCR drive and inverter systems.
Installing reactors at the input and output terminals of electrical equipment provides both protection and performance enhancement.
Line reactors help absorb the majority of electrical noise and disturbances on the power lines, which can otherwise lead to damage or malfunction of controllers such as inverters, variable speed drives, and other voltage-sensitive devices.

Applications of AC Reactors

  • Input Side (Power Source ↔ Inverter):
    Installed in series between the power source and the inverter input, the reactor helps suppress high-frequency harmonics in the input current and reduces inrush current, protecting the inverter from sudden electrical surges.

  • Output Side (Inverter ↔ Motor):
    Installed between the inverter and the motor to protect the motor from voltage spikes. These spikes are typically caused by rapid switching of IGBT transistors within the inverter, which can generate damaging high voltage peaks.

Guidelines for Selecting Line Reactors

  • Determine the rated horsepower or current of the drive or motor.

  • Select the supply voltage level (e.g., 208V, 240V, 480V, or 600V).

  • Specify the required impedance percentage (%) based on the application.

  • Evaluate inductance quality and inductance value (mH or µH) to ensure proper performance.
